Be Nice to Other PeopleThe first Precept is Be Nice to Other People. This Precept is formed by the conjunction of the Aspects of Wonder and Awe.
In many ways, Awe and Wonder are antagonistic. Whereas Awe is our sense of powerlessness, Wonder stimulates our curiosity; Awe stimulates our fear, Wonder is our sense of joy. As Awe causes us to shrink back from the terror of the universe, Wonder forces us to explore. We dread interacting with other people for fear they might hurt us. Yet, we are curious about them and feel compelled to interact with them. Each of us is polarized between fear and joy. We compromise by being nice, in the hope that the other person will also be nice or, at least, not attack us. We extend the Precept of Be Nice to other interactions. We are curious about the other creatures that inhabit our world. Yet, we are also afraid of them. Therefore, we compromise, seeking mutually beneficial relationships. The Precept of Be Nice is formed by the conjunction of the Aspects of Wonder and of Awe. When Yellow and Red are mixed, the resulting color is Orange. Therefore, the Precept of Be Nice is depicted as an Orange circle |
